Task 2 installation vid

              Task 2

This SA will present a description of my video installation as well as suffice as a pre-production for this task. It shall involve multiple subjects such as my vision for the video installation, audience interpretation, use of technology and the chosen venue.

Artist vision

I wish to project the feel of an exam hall room into my exhibition space. To achieve this affect I will use different apparatus, such as books, geometry sets, rulers etc. in order to manipulate the feel of the space. Wider books will be used as projector screens for the videos and small projectors will be used to project the image. Darkening the lights will not only make the images clearer, but will also provide a more realistic feel of a dark exam hall. This idea similarly resembles that of Tony Oursler’s “Face to Face” exhibition.

Audience perception

Upon entering the room I would like for the viewer to feel an intense dark atmosphere along with the stress of preparing for an exam. I want the viewers to reminisce in the days of their exams and the ordeals they had to go through in order to prepare for them. It would be preferred for the viewer to feel nervy and have their hairs standing on edge when entering the exhibition room. Also, filling the room with multiple clocks and adding a light echo effect to the clock ticking sound effect will add more of a tense atmosphere, which is exactly what I require.

Tech

This will explain what I plan to do in both the space for filming and the space for the exhibition.

Filming space

Many close up still shots will be used in the filming space. Mainly of students, pencils writing, clocks ticking and students turning pages. The locations for filming will be dark making it difficult for the viewer to divert their attention from the main subject.

Exhibition space

The viewer will enter a dimly lit room filled with multiple projections of different videos all of which shall be linked to each other. Each video will be focusing on its own individual subject, however in the end every video will link back to resemble one particular subject within an exam hall i.e. one video of a clock and another of someone writing. The temperature of the room shall be slightly colder than normal and all the apparatus shall be placed on classic school desks and chairs.

Sound effect

Each video clip shall utilise its own sound effects and clips. When all the sound is brought together it will sound like an enhanced version of what you hear in an exam hall. All the sound will be directed to the centre of the room where a desk and chai shall be place. Sitting in the desk and chair will create the illusion of an exam hall through sound.

Apparatus

School desks and chairs: These shall be used to place projectors books and stationary on during the exhibition. Also one desk and chair shall be placed in the centre of the room where all the sound shall collaborate.
Projectors: These shall be used to project all the video clips onto books.
Books: Books shall be used as projection screens.
Stationary: Just for decoration.

Venue
The studio is ideal for this sort of exhibition, because of its rounded shape and double door blockade. The double door blockade shall prevent external noises from reaching the exhibition. Also, because of its lack of windows it will prevent external light from entering. The rounded shape of the room will be ideal for sound projection. Also, because of its even structure it will be easier to decide on where the centre of the room is.

At the Tate Modern I experienced a number of masterpieces created by world-renowned artists. One of these exhibitions was “Tiny Death” by Bill Viola. For this exhibition I thought Viola had incorporated the use of space in one of the most peculiar ways. He placed three screens on different sides within a dark room and dimmed the light in the video so initially the viewer would not be able to see anything. Under prediction, the viewer would sit in the centre of the dark room and wait. Each video would have small periods of sudden elevation in light and sound in order to increase a dramatic feeling.

Another exhibition by Bill Viola is the “Five Angels”. The space in which this exhibition is shown has two main purposes. It is extremely dark, which helps the video stand out, as well as extremely large. Its size and dome shape help to enhance the sound greatly creating a spectacular echoing effect.

These two exhibitions utilise space in very similar ways even if it is for different purposes. Considering the idea for my exhibition I shall use a similar space and extend its potential in order to get the best out of it.
